Lagasca Embassy
Architecture that communicates function, identity and security
A new institutional office building that combines security, functionality, and representativeness in the heart of an interior courtyard in a well-established block in the Salamanca district of Madrid.
The new Embassy project addresses the creation of an institutional space for consular and administrative use. The proposal stems from the desire to integrate architecture and diplomacy.
NEED
Creating an institutional building that would guarantee maximum security in the processing of confidential data, while offering a fluid and clear experience for both citizens and diplomatic staff, was the main challenge in this design.
The architecture had to become a tool of order and transparency, precisely organizing the independent routes of visitors, employees, and institutional representatives.

APPROACH
The key to the project is structured around programmatic efficiency and architectural symbolism. A sequence of hierarchical and versatile spaces was proposed, with separate entrances for people and vehicles, protected by an openwork pergola that acts as a visual barrier from the urban environment. Inside, a large, double-height central lobby articulates spatial relationships and functions as an institutional meeting place.
This gesture represents the embassy’s openness to dialogue without compromising security or internal operations, and without sacrificing visual transparency through access control.
The chosen materials, such as wood, natural stone, and large-format ceramic tiles in neutral tones, reinforce the sense of prestige without being ostentatious. They provide a comprehensive response to spatial flows and hierarchies. This allowed for the design of a building that clearly organizes the three main functional sectors: consular assistance, administration, and security areas.
A public ground floor was developed with rooms divided according to the type of procedure, an upper floor reserved for diplomatic offices and the ambassador’s quarters, and a basement equipped with advanced technology for secure parking, protection, and staff evacuation.
The central space, a double-height hall, serves as the heart of the building, visually merging the different areas and generating a sense of institutional transparency when viewing the entire complex.
SOLUTION
Through restrained architecture, clean lines, and subtle features, a complex space is transformed into a representative, accessible, and functional environment.
The user and employee experience is carefully considered, including the application of overhead lighting, the creation of intuitive paths, and the use of noble materials, which together create an environment that conveys authority without intimidation.
This vision of contemporary institutional space demonstrates how design can dignify function and improve the perception of public service in an authoritarian country.
