BLUE HOUSE

AT THE DAWN OF THE ATLANTIC

A REFUGE BETWEEN HISTORY AND THE ATLANTIC

Sailors’ houses have memories. Their stone walls retain the echoes of ancient conversations. This renovation is not just an architectural work; it’s a dialogue between yesterday and today, an attempt to keep the heartbeat of the Galician coast alive in every room, in every beam, in every reflection of light filtering through the windows.

NEED

The house, wedged between narrow cobblestone streets and balconies overlooking the sea, needed more than restoration: it demanded respect. Recovering its essence without turning it into a museum of itself was the true achievement. Each intervention must provide the comfort and functionality of a contemporary home. Light, wood, and the breeze had to flow through it with the same natural ease with which ships arrive at the port at the end of the day.

APPROACH

The work was done with the same skill as caulking a boat before it goes out to sea. The aged wood was restored, respecting its natural patina and contrasting it with clean, modern black and white surfaces. The interior divisions were redesigned to allow the space to breathe more freely, visually enlarging the rooms and allowing the Atlantic light to pass through the house unhindered. The result was a refuge that combined the warmth of a seaside tavern with the freshness of a clear horizon.

SOLUTION

To achieve this balance between tradition and modernity, specific solutions were implemented in each space:

A kitchen and dining room with a nautical soul, where matte black furniture contrasts with the wood of the ceiling and floor, evoking the hull of a ship anchored in the sand.

Light and ethereal stairs, designed with a white structure and a metal rod railing reminiscent of mooring ropes in the harbor.

Cozy and functional bedrooms, with neutral tones and touches of color in textiles and decorative details that recall the warmth of canvas drying in the sun.

An attic opens onto the estuary, with a gabled roof that frames the large glass door, allowing the gaze to wander to the horizon, like someone searching for lighthouses in the distance.

This house has not only been renovated; it has been returned to its essence. It is now a space where seafaring tradition meets contemporary life, a place where every corner tells stories of seafaring experiences and new journeys to come.
